Swing Thoughts

Important Swing Thoughts. In the Moment!

  • Center of Pelvis should be over your ankles.
  • Depth should come from your shoulder turn and not your arms, keep arms in front of chest
  • Hand path is a simple circle around you, like baseball but different angle. Arms should drop down from top of backswing, not out. The hands are never moving towards the ball, they are working inside-out.
  • Relax your hands and arms.
  • Focus on target and hitting the ground after the ball. You will feel the pull in your left lower abdomen.
  • Keep front knee still, don’t dip it like baseball
  • Loose hands! Loose hands! Loose hands.
  • Shift weight forward around back leg, not just shifting forward!
  • Hammer the nail, this is how your swing should feel.
  • Reach for the ball like it’s on the end of a string
  • Let gravity release and square the club head. Keep loose wrist. Gravity of club head should let the club release on its own. Loose wrists or else you will hook.
  • Don’t try to hit down on the ball to take a divot. Instead, focus on keeping your arm in and shallowing out your swing and rotating your core. https://youtu.be/q2NTMqjLC8c
  • Early extension and heel hits are caused by moving your body towards the ball in the downswing. Instead move towards the target in order to get your body out of the way of yours hands. Error on the side of getting closer to the ball.
  • Baby bird, bump! Hold the club like a baby bird on takeaway, don’t loose spine angle by swaying and start the downswing with a left hip bump forward.

Body Rotation

Make sure that I am turning my body and not my arms in the backswing to get width. Pros only turn their arms about 8 inches in the backswing their rotation/width comes from their turn of their body. Also make sure that I’m standing up straight enough so that the midpoint of my hips is directly over my ankles.

Front Left Leg Should Continue to Rotate Towards Targe on the Downswing

Start your arms and shoulder turn together. Even feel your chest starting the backswing and then at the top the right shoulder and right hand pull UP a little bit before firing. Missing power by not rotating shoulders. Must have tempo to activate it consistently. 1 and 2. Like a dance.

Arms Cross with No Body Rotation

Weight should shift into left backside. Feel it in the behind. Will help to keep you from standing up. Never stand up always go around.

Biggest mistake about rotation.

  • Don’t bring your front leg back on backswing! You can move it forward though. JT does. It will cause you to slide if you move it back..
  • Push back into straight back leg.
  • Forward motion should be down, a push into the ground with the front foot. Not rotating out.

Best ROTATION DRILL for your Backswing and Downswing - It's super SIMPLE!

Speed

Arms should move quickly to start the downswing, accelerate all the way through

1. Left arm off the Chest 2. Don't tilt right too early.

These are two things that work for Monte and are not right for every golfer but they will help a lot of people out.

Sling Swing - Engage the Fascia that crosses your core

Downswing

The downswing portion of the golf swing corresponds to the stage immediately following the top of the swing, as the hands and club are brought down towards the impact with the ball.

Your hips should move first by starting to uncoil but they should do so without sliding forward much. They should allow for the smooth weight transition towards the front left foot as your shoulders uncoil in tandem. The hinge in your wrists are kept for as long as possible and your clubhead should follow a path that allows it to be square with the target at impact, the next stage. This whole process should be executed at a noticeably faster pace than the one used to bring the club up.

Move Zipper Away from the Ball as the First Move

Weight Transition

On the downswing, first move is to transition weight to front side, left arm leads the way, not the hands!!!

Rushing the Downswing

Rushing the downswing leads to casting and mishits, too steep, hosel rockets etc.

  1. Pull feeling with arms/elbows
  2. We need a complete and full backswing in order to have something to pull. There is a tendency to rush it when we try to hit harder; ‘snatching’ happens.
  3. Breathe in a long breath through nose on backswing, exhale on downswing. Will help with timing and completing backswing, storing up the energy
  4. Dropping into slot.
  5. Feel the transition to the front foot, squash bug
  6. TURN around body, not SWAY. If you sway instead of turn you will end up coming in too steep and hitting of heel or hosel.
  7. No slide. Rotate around body.
  8. Don’t pull club towards you on the downswing. DRAG it.
  9. Make sure that you are not losing WIDTH on the downswing. The feeling should be the club laying down and dragging the club head on the ground.

Shallowing the downswing

Shallowing the downswing - Right elbow drops and wins the race towards the ball over the hands. Left hand faces more towards the sky in the downswing.

Hitting the ball then the turf

Recent Thoughts

  • Downswing: turn with hips while also swing arms down. Together. Don't lose connection.
  • Backswing: Left arm across chest every time. Chin should touch left shoulder before starting downswing.
  • This is big. Stay back on your feet. Don’t move then at all. You are reaching as you transfer weight. That is causing the heel hits.
  • focus on the backswing width, and tucking the right elbow in on the downswing, no chicken wing however, it’s OK if it comes out in the backswing, tucking it shallow, the clubhead also slow down

  • Figure 8 practice

  • Like a side arm pitch
  • Ball in center for hybrid
  • Lift left foot and stomp on start of backswing

Pete Cowen - spin right wrist down

  • Arms stay connected to body
  • Wrist stays flatter
  • Spin down right forearm on downswing to compress and close face
  • Left wrist should stay flat at the top. The more so the less the face will be open Left hip https://youtube.com/shorts/O_MKJHw5Z-w?si=WO4c7j_6dKBV8exT

  • Left arm straight, don’t pronate wrist

  • Higher left arm for more depth in turn
  • ? Start turn with shoulders but complete with pelvis. This will allow a full turn and the ability keep your left arm straight

  • Weak top hand

  • Finish backswing smoothly
  • Move with chest and belly button
  • Sweep the ground
  • When I feel the weight on inside right shift around left post
  • Hands higher like Bryson
  • Left arm straight at address. Straight through swing. Keeps club face from closing
  • Lift left leg at top of swing like Bryson
  • You are over the top with incomplete backswing when tired. Pulls
  • Focus on completing backswing and squatting, starting turn from lower body
  • Bad hits are mostly toe hits when I am close to doing it right.
  • Don’t tuck your right elbow anymore keep straight
  • Don’t forget to turn doorknob
  • Keep left arm pinned against you mr chest and turn to stay in sun
  • Right elbow. Tuck in takeaway but it will go up and away at the top. Tuck on the way down. https://youtube.com/shorts/Zziwc2r0RRU?feature=share
  • Rotate like baseball swing. Chest moves the arms.
  • When out of sync face is open. Relaxed arms turn at core, weight on front side. Core turns towards the ball and arms follow it.
  • Turn with your midsection, not your shoulders
  • Hold club half way and turn to get the Feeling of where you should be turning to close the club face
  • To get the correct tempo: swing the club back and forth 3 times. 3rd swing is the correct tempo for you.
  • New feeling: side on grip with backswing straight down the target line, cupping of wrist, raised right elbow, hold the club as losely as you can and make sure your weight shifts to your front foot in the begging of the back swing.
  • Driver place on ground 3 in behind center where the bottom of the swing will be, address out the toe
  • Fight shut club feeling! Crossover release will make it fine. Don’t worry
  • small tip for people that are more bottom hand oriented then top hand... Think about holding the hand of your bottom hand wrist at impact rather then a flat top hand wrist., extend the bottom arm out keep the
  • wrist angle
  • Avoid picking up the club from p1 to p2. Hands low, butt position doesn’t change, left shoulder initiates
  • Place right hand on the side of grip, otherwise I feel like I turn the club
  • Stronger grip, left hand
  • Change how you approach right hand (from side or under. NOT ABOVE)
  • Right hand against side of club but do make ring
  • Right hand make ring with thumb and forefinger
  • Throw the mandarin orange
  • Focus on returning club head to center and rotating through impact not reaching out to tee
  • Relax forearms
  • Turn body to start downswing, don’t swing out arms
  • Bend at hips
  • Ulnar wrist, at takeaway. It will turn out like a doorknob
  • Takeaway should feel like it is outside
  • Bend upper body away in the backswing
  • Lead with right elbow
  • Make full turn
  • Club will be behind you
  • Raise right elbow at top of backswing
  • Push with left foot into the ground to prevent early extension
  • Relax your forearms. Focus on this rather than a light grip
  • Don’t think of the position of the club head in the backswing. Instead think of the back of you hand
  • Pull right shoulder rather than push left
  • Left stinky leg is destroying rotation, causing early extension? Keep it still. Knee can bend in a tad. Point toes out a tad, keep hip rotation and plane, last point chin towards the ball. Rotating your head helps to keep spine angle.

Best Swing Ever (6 iron, Jun17 2023, Father’s Day Weekend)

From the inside (key thoughts) 1. Head focused on back of the ball 2. Feel like your going to squash something underneath the lead toe 3. Brave with your rotation (will push back heal towards target) 4. Plant front foot to initiate the downswing, 5. post up to finish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yu_THyEUiw

  • left thumb on the club as light as possible
  • right thumb to the right side of the club as light as possible
  • right pointer craddling the club in the backswing
  • start with weight on right foot
  • immediately shift to left foot
  • fully commit to the turn (even though the head felt weird at the top)
  • top of backswing 50/50
  • Plant front foot to initiate the downswing, post up
  • Finish allowed me to rotate over the ball and finish strong, hit ground after ball

When: Today

Rotate around center of pelvis

  • Right hip has to go up and back, it's not level it's like spiral staircase https://youtube.com/shorts/B7eWA9CjTRc?si=YdUhW_oyQMsVtUQR

  • ? Right foot lift too early gets in the way of downswing

Momentum - Driver Swing

  1. The first step involves adjusting shoulder angles to avoid a downward strike on the ball, which can reduce power. By setting the body behind the ball and lowering the trail shoulder, golfers can achieve an upward strike for more distance.

  2. Moving to the second step, Danny emphasizes the importance of momentum and movement over static positions. He suggests imagining tossing a heavy sandbag to initiate a natural turning into the trail leg, thereby creating the necessary momentum for a powerful swing. This approach aims to bring more flow and intention to the swing, moving away from a focus on accuracy and control that can restrict movement.

  3. The third step introduces the "towel exercise" to address excessive rotation in the swing. This drill helps balance the three forces in a golf swing: rotational, lateral, and vertical, with an emphasis on the vertical force. By simulating the swing with a towel, golfers can learn to achieve a higher finish with their hands, indicating a proper balance of forces and a more effective swing.
