Fundamentals
The Grip
- Left thumb should ride right side of the shaft
- Right hand should be placed over thumb. Right hand grip stronger than before
Driver yips after changing grip. I think that my strong grip is preventing me from releasing the club. Trying to change gas caused a big problem. Choke up on club and focus on hinging at fingers, not thumbs. Let it be smooth and close naturally. I can’t close it with that grip unless I do.
Left thumb wrapped on right side of club is problem. Pinch left thumb and pointer together. Thumb resting on top of shaft?
I had the same experience. I was in an endless cycle between strong/weak grips. My strong grip draws eventually turned into hooks and pulls so I weakened my grip which initially fixed the issue until I started hitting fades which then turned into slices. It’s probably a different issue. You can play well with a strong grip. My guess is you’re hanging back and your hands are getting ahead of your body and closing the face. It’s a timing issue. I fixed it by making sure I transfer my weight forward and not releasing my hands at all. Still get that strong grip compression and the extra lag gives you even more distance. Your also not trying to time the club face with your arms which helps with consistency.
Swing Types
-
Chip Swing:
-
7:30 Swing: (not used often as I prefer the Diekmann method)
- Description: The 7:30 swing position refers to the location of the club at the halfway point of the backswing. Imagine a clock face, and if the target is at 12 o'clock, the 7:30 position would be roughly halfway between the target and the low point of the swing arc (usually the ball position).
- Characteristics: This position is often associated with a shorter backswing, and it's commonly used as a reference for golfers looking to control the length of their swing for better consistency and accuracy.
-
9:00 or Waist Swing:
- Description: The 9:00 swing, or waist-high swing, indicates the position where the hands and club reach approximately waist height during the backswing. Again, using the clock face analogy, this position is roughly at 9 o'clock if the target is at 12 o'clock.
- Characteristics: A 9:00 swing is often recommended for golfers who are working on a more controlled and compact backswing. It can help maintain better balance and consistency in the swing.
-
3/4 or Armpit or 10:30 Swing:
- Description: The 3/4 swing, or armpit-high swing, signifies a backswing that stops when the hands and club reach a position around the height of the armpit. This is typically shorter than a full backswing, where the hands might go higher, closer to the shoulder.
- Characteristics: The 3/4 swing is often used by golfers who want to find a balance between generating power and maintaining control. It can be a helpful reference point for those looking to improve their ball-striking consistency.
-
Punch Shot
- Choose a lower lofted club (3-iron or 4-iron).
- Place the ball slightly back in your stance.
- Take a narrower stance and grip down for control.
- Shift weight forward for a downward strike.
- Keep the backswing and follow-through shorter.
- Aim slightly left of the target for right-handed golfers.
- Practice to develop a feel for the shot.
